Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of electrical power and usable thermal energy, such as steam, hot air for heating and drying, or absorption refrigeration. For intensive power requirement, the steam can be used to produced more power with steam turbine generator set. Cogeneration will consume less fuel than separately generation of power and steam.
The typical users of cogeneration are pulp & paper, food, ceramics, chemicals, and others.
Steam Production
The most common method of cogeneration is steam production. Steam can be generated at specific condition such as pressure and temperature to meet process requirement. It can also be used for steam turbines for more power.
Fluid Heating
The fluid heating process will raise the temperature of a working fluid utilizing the gas turbine exhaust. This approach is suitable for applications of thermic oil, absorption chillers, and others.
Direct Heating
Gas turbine exhaust is also suitable for direct heating process. For ceramic industries, the exhaust gas which has temperature of above 500°C can be used directly into spray dryer to replace the conventional burner. The temperature and mass flow can be controlled by mixing ambient air with the exhaust gas. For tissue making process, the exhaust gas is suitable for hood application.
